On a rather unpromising-looking day we caught the boat to the small neighbouring island of Herm. It was low tide and we landed at Rosiere Steps.
But we were soon able to fold away our waterproofs
and walked to the harbour and on to Fisherman's Beach
and from there over to the other side of the island to beautiful Shell Bay
which is very aptly named
and where the water is very cold. My swim did not last long!
Herm is quiet and uncrowded, with gentle walks and lovely beaches. Only the Mermaid Tavern, where we had a huge plate of fish and chips, followed by an ice-cream, had the more usual bustling summer holiday atmosphere.
